David Stern

David Joel Stern ( born September 22, 1942 in New York City ) is the former Commissioner of the National Basketball Association. The lawyer took over the post in 1984 by Larry O'Brien. Under Stern's leadership, the NBA expanded to become one of the largest and most popular professional leagues. Since 1984, the NBA of the past 23 grew to 30 teams today. Also in 1996 two of the NBA were established subordinate leagues, the Women's League WNBA and NBDL league development. On October 25, 2012, he announced his retirement as Commissioner for 1 February 2014. Was succeeded by his deputy, Adam Silver.
