David Stuart (Mayanist)

David Stuart ( born August 7, 1965) is an American Altamerikanist which explores the culture of the Maya.

He is the son of the Mayan culture scientist George Stuart and Gene Stuart. He began to decipher Mayan hieroglyphics under the guidance of Linda Schele at the age of 8 years. In 1983, at the age of 18, he became the youngest recipient of the " genius grant" MacArthur society. He has made major contributions in the field of epigraphy, particularly in connection with the deciphering of the Maya writing the pre-Columbian Maya civilization of Central America done. Stuart is Professor of the Mesoamerican Art and Writing at the University of Texas at Austin.
