David Theo Goldberg

David Theo Goldberg ( born 1952 in South Africa) is a philosopher.

Education and Career

Goldberg studied philosophy and economics at the University of Cape Town. At the City University of New York, he received his doctorate of philosophy. After he had been a professor and director at the School of Justice Studies at Arizona State University, he was appointed in July 2000 as director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute ( Uchri ), means that in at the University of California ( UC) the fields of humanities and art theory research.

He has also been appointed to faculty professorships for Comparative Literature and Criminology, Law and Society at the University of California, Irvine (UCI ) and is a member of the Institute of Critical Theory in the UCI.

Prior to his academic career, Goldberg has worked as a producer of independent films and music videos, some of which were also aired on MTV. Together with Michael Oblowitz he has the award-winning film The Iceland produces over Südafrike.

Research and Projects

Goldberg is a leading scholar of critical racism theory and is invited by universities to give lectures on the subject worldwide.

Goldberg's research spans the areas of political theory, race and racism, ethics, law and society, critical theory, cultural studies, and lately digital humanities.

He initiated the Council for the Humanities techniques, arts and social sciences at UC, which is independent faculty directly subordinate to the President of the UC. He is also a member of the university-wide committee for the control of the management of research information and data ( including libraries and digital libraries ) of the University.

Together with Cathy Davidson of Duke University Goldberg founded the organization Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Advanced Collaboratory HASTAC ( "Advanced collaboration of Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology "). The goal is to promote partnerships between the interests of the Humanities, arts, social sciences, technology and supercomputer research to research, teaching and public impact. Davidson and Goldberg have jointly published essays in which they share the creative and dynamic use of digital technologies to enhance research, teaching and learning in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Both derive the HASTAC MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition ( " HASTAC MacArthur competition for digital media and learning"), one endowed with prize money of up to $ 2,000, the annual international contest for the transport of transformative learning practices through the application of digital technologies.

Books and Publications

Goldberg is the author of several books, including of The Racial State (2002); Racial Subjects: Writing on Race in America ( 1997); Racist Culture: Philosophy and the Politics of Meaning ( 1993); and Ethical Theory and Social Issues: Historical Texts and Contemporary Readings (1989 /1995).

He has published several anthologies out or co-edited, including Anatomy of Racism (1990) and Multiculturalism: A Critical Reader (1995) and is the founder and co-editor of the journal Social Identities: Journal for the Study of Race, Nation and Culture.
