David Urquhart (bishop)

David Andrew Urquhart ( born April 14, 1952 in Scotland ) is a British Anglican theologian and Bishop of Birmingham since 2006 in the Church of England.

Life

Urquhart grew up in the Scottish Highlands. He attended Rugby School in Warwickshire and studied at the Ealing College Business School, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. After graduating, he worked in 1971 one years volunteered as an aid worker in Uganda. He then worked for ten years in various positions for British Petroleum.

In preparation for the priesthood, he studied theology at Wycliffe Hall College, University of Oxford. In 1984 he was ordained a priest. He was 1984-1987 parochial vicar at St. Nicholas Church in Kingston upon Hull in the Diocese of York. In 1987 he was Dean (Team Vicar) for the district Drypool; he held until 1992 the church office. He was pastor (Vicar ) at Holy Trinity Church in Coventry in 1992. In 2000 he was Bishop ( Suffragan ) of Birkenhead. In May 2006 he was appointed Bishop of Birmingham. On 17 November 2006 he was officially introduced at the Cathedral of Birmingham in his office.

Urquhart was since 1994 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Church Mission Society and since 2002 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Wirral Local Strategic Partnership. He was appointed Prelate of the Order of St Michael and St George in 2005. Urquhart is representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury for relations with the Church of England to China.

Urquhart is unmarried. His hobbies include hiking and he walks in the Scottish Highlands, actively playing Fives and movies.

Membership in the House of Lords

Urquhart heard since 2010 as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords. He succeeds David Charles James, former Bishop of Bradford. On 26 October 2010 Urquhart was officially introduced in the House of Lords.
