David-Zvi Pinkas

David - Zvi Pinkas (Hebrew דוד - צבי פנקס, born December 5, 1895 in Sopron, Hungary, UK, † August 14 1952 in Israel) was an Israeli politician and Minister of Transport.

Life

Pinkas attended secondary school in Vienna and studied at a yeshiva in Freiburg im Breisgau and law at the University of Vienna. He was a Zionist in the movement of Mizrachi in Vienna and one of the founders of the Yeshuran movement. He was one of the first signatories of the Israeli declaration of independence 37. In 1949 he was Knessetabgeordeter of the United Religious Front, a political alliance of the four major religious parties in Israel: HaMisrachi, HaPo'el haMisrachi, Agudat Jisra'el and Poalei Agudat Jisra'el.

In June 1952 Pinkas escaped an assassination attempt by Amos Kenan and Shaltiel Ben Yair. They wanted to protest against Pinkas decision that had prohibited all forms of public transport on Shabbat. Nevertheless Pinkas died after two months of a heart attack. He was buried in the Trumpeldor cemetery (Hebrew: בית הקברות טרומפלדור ) in Tel Aviv. The named after him Ramat Pinkas (Hebrew רָמַת פִּנְקָס ), is now part of Or Yehuda.
