History

Davies was a 1868 furnished by the Southern Pacific Railroad train depot around in a heavily agricultural area.

University of California, Davis

Davis is known primarily as a university city, as the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) is located here. The nucleus of the university was founded in 1905 as the University Farm in 1909 and took the teaching on. In 1959 the Institute was incorporated into the system of the University of California as the seventh educational institution. The College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies enjoys a high reputation for its pioneering role in organic farming.

City symbol is the wheel, because Davis is considered as a bike city. In fact, the city offers a not only for U.S. relations, well developed cycle path system. She was honored by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community and was the first of three communities in the U.S. ( in addition to Boulder and Portland ), the highest award level in platinum.

The city is strongly ecologically oriented, provides a regularly occurring organic market ( Farmers Market ), has long been a supermarket with organically produced foods ( Food Coop) and one of the oldest eco festivals of California ( Whole Earth Day).
