Davis County (Iowa)

The Davis County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 8,753 inhabitants and a population density of 6.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bloomfield.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Iowa. The northeast of the Davis County comes close to the Des Moines River. It is bordered to the south by Missouri and has an area of 1,308 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. At the Davis County borders the following counties:

History

The Davis County was formed in 1843 from parts of the former Van Buren County. It was named after Garrett Davis (1801-1872), a deputy of the U.S. - House of Representatives (1839-1847) and later U.S. - Senator from Kentucky ( 1861-1872 ).

As the administrative center was chosen from the beginning to the City of Bloomfield. The first courthouse was a two-story log house and was completed in 1844. As the building was very expensive repairs, it was finally abandoned in 1851. Over the next 27 years the offices of Countyverwaltung were housed in separate buildings in Bloomfield.

In August 1877, the foundation stone for a new judicial and administrative building was laid, which is still used today.

In June 2002, the 125th anniversary of the building was celebrated in Davis County.
