Davis McCaughey

John Davis McCaughey ( born July 12, 1914 in Belfast, United Kingdom; † 25 March 2005 in Melbourne, Australia ) was a professor of theology and governor of the Australian state of Victoria.

Life

McCaughey 1941 was ordained pastor of the Presbyterian church. In the following ten years he has also worked in the ecumenical organization Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. In 1953 he emigrated with his family to Australia, where he was offered a professorship at the University of Melbourne. From 1978-79, he was Deputy Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. McCaughey also strove for the founding of La Trobe University.

McCaughey was also a driving force in the establishment of the Uniting Church in Australia in 1977, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches united. He was lead author of the font Basis of Union, which formed the basis for the unification of the various currents. McCaughey was also president of the first Assembly of the Uniting Church.

The aging of 71 years, he was appointed in 1986 Governor of Victoria, and remained so until 1992 During his tenure, he has been described as down to earth.; so he traded in his official car, a Rolls Royce, against a more favorable vehicle, and pulled on flights business class compared to the first class before.

McCaughey was married and had five children. He died on 25 March 2005 in Melbourne.
