Davit

A davit (German [ de ː vɪt ], Engl. [ Dævɪt, deɪ̯vɪt ] ) is a fabricated from wood or iron crane near the side wall of larger vessels, hoisted the boats ( exposed or brought up ) are. The davit can also be used for launching and easing heavy anchor. It is mainly used but for lifeboats.

Today, only steel davits are used:

  • The Gravity is the usual and prescribed variant. It uses no power for paying out of the boat, ie this can be suspended in the occupied davit of people, only one of them must solve the rope brake to allow the boat to the water.
  • Freifalldavits are no davits in the traditional sense. The boat falls fully staffed free from his bracing into the water. The davit is used only for hauling and stowing the boat.
  • The Caley Davit the boat depends on only one hot spot and is rigidly connected to the ship until just eased over the water surface and dropped only there with the Runner and detached automatically.
