Dawid Janowski

Dawid Janowski Markelowitsch (born 25 Maijul / June 6 1868greg in Wołkowysk, .. † January 15, 1927 in Hyères) was a Polish chess player.

He was at the beginning of the 20th century as one of the best offensive player and was known for unconditionally to play for a win. This trait was also outside of chess. So he lost a cash prize he had won at a tournament in Monte Carlo, within no time at roulette.

End of the 1880s Janowski moved to Paris. In the Café de la Regence, he developed into a strong chess player. In 1894 he first participated in an international tournament. In Leipzig he finished the 9th Congress of the German Chess Federation the 6th - 7th Place. After that he played for 29 years for France.

Among his great successes in this period include the victories in Monte Carlo in 1901, Hanover 1902 At the tournament of Ostend 1905 he came to the shared second place behind Géza Maroczy and received for his game against Siegbert (before Harry Nelson Pillsbury ) and Barmen 1905. In 1909 he played in Paris two competitions against Emanuel Lasker, where it did not go to the World Chess Championship. After Janowski had designed the first draw with 2-2 chess patron Leo Nardus funded a second match, the Janowski but with significantly lost 1-7 at two outbuildings. He was characterized but not yet convinced of Lasker of chess superiority and demanded a rematch. This was held in 1910 in Berlin as a world championship fight and ended in a complete disaster for Janowski, who lost 0-8 at with three draws. The chess journalist Georg Marco took the match history with the words either won or lost Lasker Janowski together.

From 1914 to 1925 he lived in the United States. From then on, eased his skill level because of problems with health, he suffered from tuberculosis. At the tournament in New York in 1924 he finished last.

His best Historical Elo rating was 2776 in July 1904. According to this controversial rating he was from May to September 1904 in first place in the world rankings.
