Dayton is a city in Liberty County in the U.S. state of Texas.

Geography

The city is located in the south of the county in southeast Texas, is in the east about 100 miles from Louisiana, located in the south about 70 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 28.6 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The town was founded in 1831 under the name of West Liberty and was part of the city of Liberty, separated by the Trinity River. A road and a ferry connected the two places. 1854, the city was renamed in Day 's Town, in honor of IC Day, a landowner in the south of the city. The railway station was known under the name of West Liberty, Days Station and Dayton station. With the establishment of the first post office, the post office forgave the place the name Dayton.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 5,709 people in 2,129 households and 1,517 families. The population density was 199.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 71.08 % White, 19.69 % African American, 0.44 % Native American, 0.68 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 6.67 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.40% were of mixed descent, and 10.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.18 persons to.

30.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% 25-44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.0 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 87.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,401, and the median income for a family $ 47,250. Males have a median income of $ 39,075 versus $ 21,068 for females.
