DB Class VT 11.5

The VT 11.5 series, colloquially often just called TEA, was a diesel multiple unit of the German Federal Railroad ( DB). He was an epoch-making development in the field of German rail vehicle construction in the 1950s and the showpiece of the German Railways. With the introduction of the series of DB schemes as of 1 January 1968, the power heads (engine cars ) means the car on the series 901 to the series were 601,

History

For international TEE service with increased comfort, the DMUs VT 11.5 were developed in Germany. Total delivered in 1957 MAN 19 machine carriage, Linke- Hofmann -Busch 23 compartment car and wagon factory Wegmann eight wide-body cars and eight dining car and nine kitchen car. This was planned seven-part multiple unit trains with 122 seats and 46 seats in the dining compartment (maximum possible ten-part were ) formed, which were 130 m long and had a total mass of 230 tons. These trains consisted of one machine carriage to the ends of the train, two compartment car, a seating car, a dining car with a bar and passenger room and a kitchen car with dining area. The design of the trains was designed by the German architect and industrial designer Klaus Flesche, the longtime director of the Department of Industrial Design at the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg- Nürnberg AG.

From 1957, the use of the VT 11.5 series in TEE service followed. Thus, initially daily five trainsets were needed and run the following international connections:

  • TEE 31/32 Rhein- Main Frankfurt / M Amsterdam
  • TEA 74/75 Sapphire Dortmund- Oostende
  • TEA 77/78 Helvetia Hamburg-Altona - Zurich
  • TEE 168/185 Paris -Ruhr Dortmund- Paris Nord

The ever-increasing electrified route network and the limited capacity of the DMUs led the mid-sixties becoming a conversion of international TEE courses on trains hauled by locomotives, such as the TEE 77/78 Helvetia. There were 1965 new connections:

  • TEE 155/190 Parsifal Hamburg Altona- Nord Paris
  • TEA 25/26 Diamond Dortmund -Antwerp
  • TEA 19/20 Sapphire Frankfurt / M Oostende

However, national calls on the TEE system were now possible and the multiple units of class 601 were used 1968-1971 as F trains and then for the first time with the new product name Intercity than pure first - class trains:

  • Ft 38/37 Hans Sachs Dortmund and Munich
  • Ft 140/141 Sachsenroß Frankfurt / M Cologne
  • Ft 117/120 IC Prince Regent Frankfurt / M Munich
  • Ft 170/171 IC Mercator Bremen -Stuttgart

On Saturdays in the winter sports season perverted 1969-1979 F (or 1971 IC) Karwendel as a travel agency special train in the winter sports resorts of the Karwendel area:

With the introduction of the InterCity system 1971 TEE trains were integrated into it. The last German TEE connection existed until 1972:

  • TEA 17/18 or 84/85 Mediolanum Munich -Milan

1971 advised the German Federal Railways InterCity system as a city rapid transit system with first - class cars in a two -hour intervals. For the permissible maximum vehicle speed of the series could be 601/901 increased by seven-part units to 160 km / hr. On average, six units were used daily. In order to operate ten -piece units that had 256 seats, with a vehicle speed of 160 km / h and a gas turbine with an output of 2200 hp was installed in four power heads in place of the diesel engine. These power heads were redrawn on the series 602. With the introduction of new Intercity Systems 1979 - both classes of cars by the hour - ended the use of the Series 601/901 and 602/901 in the IC market.

After a conversion followed from 1980 onwards, the use of series 601/901, as ten-car trains with 300 seats, in the tourism special traffic than Alpine Lake Express. Starting from Hamburg and Dortmund perverse tourism trains, partially coupled to twenty -piece units, in the rolling traffic to Berchtesgaden, Grafenau / ground corn, Seebrugg / Lindau, Oberstdorf / Seefeld, Innsbruck / Zell am See and Salzburg / Berchtesgaden. This plan deployment lasted until 1988. Starting in 1987, all vehicles in the series 601/901 were sold (up to 601 002 and 901 403, which were scrapped ) to Italy.

1990, a ten-part unit on loan from Italy to Germany and used by 27 July 1990 to 29 September 1990 as InterCity "Max Liebermann " of the Deutsche Reichsbahn between Hamburg and Berlin. Part of this drive train with the power heads 601 006 015 and was later provided with a blue and beige paint and taken over by the ESG Augsburg by the SSB Cargoitalia; he is now on display at the Augsburg Railway Park. There, since 2010 there is also a six -piece beige / red unit with the power heads 601 013 and 019 Since 2007, the chef Alfons Beck, together with the team at Augsburg Railroad and Special car operating company in the blue-beige painted furniture project "shoe Beck's Blue Star Train. " The train was thereby converted into a 204 -meter-long restaurant. Maximum 155 guests can be catered for.

As of 2001, there was the hope of rebuilding and re-commissioning of a copy of the VT 11.5 TEE- series by the German railway. However, the cost of the restoration went on to five million euros, partly because of today's safety standards ( for exits, non-flammable carpets, etc. ), so the project had to be stopped. Parts of the TEE train were on display in front of the fire in the Nuremberg Transport Museum. The diesel engine head 601 008, the Großraumwagen 901 122, the compartment wagon 901 203 and the gas turbine engine head 602 003 are since April 2011 in the SVG Railway World Horb am Neckar. Previously, the gas turbine head in the Nuremberg Transport Museum was issued.

From behind the roundhouse presented in the Bw Leipzig Süd vehicles of series 601/901 fell on 16 January 2012, the middle car 901 116 destroyed by fire. These are the vehicles for the planned museum set the DB Museum. In March 2012, the vehicles were transported to various locations: engine head 601 014, and trailer 901 115, 304 and 401 in the railway world of experience Horb, the engine head 601 018 into the South German Railway Museum Heilbronn and the middle car 901 121 and 404 in the depot Lichtenfels of the DB Museum Nuremberg.

Technology

The VT series 11.5 and 601 possessed in each engine head a high-speed 12 - cylinder diesel engine 12V 538 TA 10 MTU 1030 hp or a diesel engine of the Maybach type MD 650/1B with 1100 hp, and a hydraulic power transmission by Voith ( Type LT 360r ), which helped her to a maximum speed of 140 km / h, which was later raised to 160 km / hr. The truck was driven under the engine. The brakes were air disc brakes supplemented with a magnetic track brake. All funds cars had their own air conditioning.

Both power heads working in parallel. Using an electrical multiple unit control up to two additional trainsets could be driven. The controller was compatible with the VT 08.

Description: Series 602

In four machines car early seventies driving diesel engines were gas turbines of AVCO Lycoming ( TF35 series ) supplied by KHD, replaced with 2200 hp and designated as class 602. Externally, the gas turbine variant, reflected in the significantly enlarged air intakes.

The four power heads were used in intercity transport. The scheduled operation began on 14 July 1974, when the intercity connection " Sachsenroß " between Hamburg and Ludwigshafen on a multiple unit with two power cars of the series 602 was converted. As of January 1975, it was possible with a newly developed ego Angle control for the confluence of gas turbine and diesel power to drive the unit trains in mixed operation with the series 601 and 602. As a rule, three power heads were in the plan operating in mixed mode in use and remained in reserve.

In April 1975, a train consisting of two power cars of series 602 and two intermediate cars, between Celle and Uelzen 217 km / h new speed record for German internal combustion rail vehicles. This was outbid on 13 January 2000 by an ICE TD with 222 km / h. After problems with the gas turbines and for reasons of economy, the Series 602 was phased out ( just like the gas turbine locomotives of the series 210 and 219 ) between 22 February 1978 and 25 July 1979, with the achievement of the statutory deadlines.

Version of the Danish State Railways

Eleven machine carriage of LITRA MA Series, as well as intermediate and driving coaches (AM, BM, BR, BS), were delivered 1963-1966 to the Danish State Railways. They were in use until 1990.

Stamp

On 10 October 2006 at the Deutsche Post AG appeared as part of a charity stamp series of four stamps a brand for VT 11.5 to 55 25 euro cents.
