History

DB Regio AG emerged from the transport business of Deutsche Bahn AG in the course of the second stage of the railway reform on 1 January 1999. It operates the InterRegioExpress and for the most part Regional Express, Regional Bahn and S -Bahn in Germany.

In early 2001, the Company announced a change in management structure. Instead of the previously centrally controlled society nine independent country offices should occur, which in turn the regional train and bus companies should be subordinated. The restructuring should be saved 400 of 700 sites in the DB Regio center or around 2,500 jobs across the company. This process by which the economy should be improved substantially, was the end of 2001 before completion. Rail and road traffic was transferred to Regional 2002 nine regional offices (North, Northeast, Lower Saxony / Bremen, North Rhine -Westphalia, Hesse, Southwest, Southeast, Bavaria and Baden -Wuerttemberg) from January. The market share of DB Regio on regional rail passenger transport in Germany was placed at 92 per cent, in other public transport at seven.

In contrast to its sister company DB long-distance AG, DB Regio AG operates its trains are not self-financing, but continues to order the authority for the rail passenger transport. After the first stage of the railway reform in 1994, the former DB AG first went nationwide almost all regional rail services. Due to increasing allocations of regional rail services through competitive procedures have now also competitors of DB, such as Veolia or the metronom Railroad Company, entrusted with the implementation of railway passenger services on German routes and lines. The decision of some PTAs, without a public tender long-term transport contracts ( over ten years and more) complete with DB Regio AG, was widely criticized.

In 2006, DB Regio AG won six of twenty procurement procedures. According to the company, won 29 percent of all appropriate tenders in Germany in 2008. In 2009 the company won in regional traffic claims to three-quarters of all tenders. In 2011 the company decided 72 percent of all contracts for himself, in 2012 and 52 percent in the first half of 2013 half. According to the company, need a rate of 70 percent in order to maintain its market share stable and to cover its fixed costs for existing capacity.

On 23 February 2010 it was announced that the two S-Bahn operations in Berlin and Hamburg on 1 March 2010, the DB Regio be subject. On 1 January 2011 DB city traffic will be integrated into the business unit DB Regio. Simultaneously, a new Board of Management position Regio bus is created.
