De Baarsjes

De Baarsjes is a neighborhood in the municipality of Amsterdam in the city of Amsterdam West and is located in the Dutch province of North Holland with a floor area of 1.64 km ² and a population of around 34,000 with 126 different nationalities (as of 2012).

History

The name De Baarsjes comes from the eponymous former village.

In the 17th century stood in the still rural area a hostel by the name of De Drie Baarsjes. De Baarsjes was reported on official documents for the first time on 27 May 1642.

1904, the tram line (" Tramlijn " ) between Amsterdam - Haarlem and Zandvoort built and applied at the same time the Admiraal de Ruijterweg. This area was designated Trompbuurt and was part of the former town of Sloten. Since 1921 Sloten is a part of the municipality of Amsterdam. With the annexation of Sloten was built on the southern side of the A. de Ruijterweg the neighborhood Chasseebuurt. This district was expanded between 1920 and 1930 due to the " Plan West" in the style of the Amsterdam School ( Amsterdamse School) and created 1925 Mercatorplein. The neighborhood district Mercatorbuurt, Admiralenbuurt, Chasseebuurt, Trompbuurt and Postjesbuurt form the district De Baarsjes since 1990. It borders the Rembrandt Park and the Erasmus Park. The trams No. 7, 12, 13, 14 and 17 will take you through the district (as of September 2009).

Natural garden

The Natuurtuin - Slatuinen ( " Nature Garden Salad Garden " ), named after the Slatuinenweg (literally " salad garden path " ) is located in the residential area between the Chasseebuurt Slatuinenweg, the Chasseestraat, the A. de Ruijterweg and Jacob van Wassenaar Obdamstraat. At the beginning of the 21st century, the " garden " used as a small park and was called Wilhelmina Parkje. Until 1984 the territory of the Hendriksen family belonged, and was known under the name Terrein Hendriksen as a nursery and garden center. Early 1980 the nursery was closed and the grounds overgrown, to the City of Amsterdam in 1986 took the decision to cut down about 40 trees. 1991 residents taken to reshape the initiative around the former nursery in a natural garden with a social function. The City Council approved the proposal. Since then, the garden with the help of twelve volunteer and a paid employee is maintained and open at certain times for the residents. The garden is used by the users also like as a little hidden paradise ( " hidden Paradijsje " ) referred.

Culture

In De Baarsjes there are seven religious institutions, churches ( Kerken ) and mosques ( Moskee ).

  • The Moroccan An- Nour Moskee at Witte de Withstraat.
  • The Turkish mosque Ayasofia Moskee on Postjesweg ( Millî Görüş )
  • A Pakistani mosque, Moskee Ghousia al Masijd on Baarsjesweg
  • The Roman Catholic Church Augustinuskerk, part of the old people's home Nieuw Vredenburgh
  • The Jerusalemkerk (Jerusalem Church ) in Ján Maijenstraat
  • A Surinamese Church of the Pentecostal church, Maranatha Ministries
  • The Universele Kerk of Gods Rijk (literally: Universal Church of the Kingdom of God ) in Ján Evertsenstraat
  • The Chasseekerk ( Chasseekirche ) from the years of 1924 bis 1926. Serves no longer religious gatherings. The Stadtteilrat wil an apartment complex built at this point.

Residential area in De Baarsjes

The district consists of five neighborhood districts:

  • Admiralenbuurt. Created around 1920, and since 1990, lying in the urban district De Baarsjes, since May 2010, the borough is one of Amsterdam West. The name comes from the Dutch and Zeeland ( Zeeland ) admirals which several streets were named. In this neighborhood is located the Admiralengracht.
  • Chasseebuurt, named after the Chasseestraat, surrounded by Baarsjesweg, Postjesweg, Admiraal de Ruijterweg, the Admiralengracht and Ján Evertsenstraat.
  • Mercatorbuurt. The Mercatorplein was designed by architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage. The place got its name after the cartographer Gerardus Mercator and was modernized in 2009, among other things, with more green space.
  • Postjesbuurt. This area borders in part to the Rembrandt Park. Here is where the Surinameplein annually on 30 June and 1 July, a memorial service held for the abolition of slavery.
  • Trompbuurt, named after the navigator Maarten Tromp Harpertszoon The Trompbuurt was formerly in the town of Sloten, is from 1921 to the municipality of Amsterdam.
