De Clare

The Clares are an Anglo- Norman noble family, which is descended from the Dukes of Normandy from the House of Rolloniden.

Geoffrey de Brionne, Count of Eu, † probably in 1015, was a son of Duke Richard I, the great-grandfather of William the Conqueror. Geoffrey's son was Gilbert de Brionne, † 1040, Count of Eu and probably also Count of Brionne, which, however, his property could not pass on to his sons. This, Richard Fitz Gilbert, 1st Lord of Clare, † 1090, and Baudouin, † 1095, went with William the Conqueror, who later became William I, as part of the Norman Conquest in 1066 to England.

Richard Fitz Gilbert received large estates in Suffolk and erected in the town of Clare, after his family was named, a castle whose ruins still stands today. His great-grandson, Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, also called Strongbow, put his military operations with the foundation for the conquest of England in Ireland. Other famous rung of this family were Richard de Clare, 6th Lord of Clare and his son Gilbert de Clare, 7th Lord of Clare and 1st Earl of Gloucester, the couple took over the leadership of the barons together, which King John, also known as John Lackland mocked, forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215.

Probably the most famous was Gilbert de Clare Clare, 9th Lord of Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford and 3rd Earl of Gloucester ( 1243-1295 ), one of the leaders of the aristocracy in the early phase of the Barons ' War against King Henry III. . he joined in 1265 the pages by him, together with Prince Edward, the King helped to conquer, with exceedingly great military skill in the Battle of Evesham. In 1290 he married Joan of Acre, daughter of King Edward I a; with his son and successor, Gilbert de Clare, Lord of Clare 10 ( 1291-1314 ), however, the family died out in the male tribal Clare. Piers Gaveston, 1st Earl of Cornwall and Hugh le Despenser the Younger, both in 1312 and in 1326 executed minions of Edward II, were married to two sisters of the last Earl. The youngest sister, Elizabeth de Clare ( 1291-1360 to ), is the founder of Clare College at the prestigious University of Cambridge.
