De doctrina christiana

De doctrina christiana ( "From the Christian doctrine ") is a hermeneutic work of Augustine of Hippo. It consists of four books that describe, is how to interpret the Scriptures and teach. The first three books were published in the year 397, the fourth was added in the year 426.

Augustine differs fundamentally the res (singular ), the one thing that the highest good, the enjoyment of the deity of the res ( plural), the many things and signs ( signa ) with which the font this one teaches, as a direct, sign timeless teachings of God had become impossible by the Fall.

From there, it establishes three rules for Christian teachers and catechists:

  • To discover a truth in the signa Scripture
  • To convey this truth again through the other signa
  • The truth of Scripture to defend signaled when it is attacked by relying on direct spiritual knowledge.
