De Havilland Goblin

The de Havilland Goblin or Halford H-1 is a British jet engine of the first generation. It is a Einwellentriebwerk. The compressor is a single stage centrifugal compressor. As a combustion chambers 16 combustors are used. The axial flow turbine is a single stage.

The development started in April 1941 and was conducted by Frank Halford. The engine was based on the designs of Frank Whittle, however, the combustion chambers were changed so that the gas flow had to be redirected to them, but this could just run through. The prototype was launched on April 13, 1942 for the first time independently. In June 1942, the expected performance could be achieved. The first flight of the engine in a Gloster Meteor was held on 5 March 1943. In parallel, the Halford H-2 was developed from the de Havilland Ghost engine was built.

In July 1943 an H-1 shipped to the United States in order to serve there the prototype of the Lockheed P- 80 as the engine. Allis -Chalmers as a licensee should produce the engine as the J- 36 series, but could not ensure the production quality, and the project was stopped after various delays.

With the Swedish Svenska AB Flygmotor also a licensed production has been agreed.
