De la Gardie

The De la Gardie are a Swedish Gräfliches since 1625 noble family of French origin, that rose in the 17th century to the highest nobility circles and government offices and Sweden had a decisive effect.

The de la Gardie go back to Jacques d' Escouperie, Seigneur de Russol De la Gardie, and his wife Catherine de Sainte Colombe. Their son Pontus De la Gardie (1520-1585), Baron of Ekholmen, married 1580 Sofia Gyllenhielm ( 1556-1583 ), an illegitimate daughter of King John III. of Sweden, who died in childbirth.

They had three children. The eldest daughter Brita married the Swedish statesman Gabriel Oxenstierna, the second son of Jacob, the Ebba Brahe Magnus yolk. Their son Magnus married in 1647 the sister of the king, the favorite of Queen Christina and the famous Empire Drost and Chancellor of Sweden was.

The family records of the De la Gardie are scattered. A significant portion is located in the University Library Lund ( Delagardiska Archivet, ed. Wieselgren of, 20 vols, Stockholm and Lund 1831-44 ). The correspondence and records Magnus Gabriels are kept mainly in the National Archives in Stockholm. The correspondence of Pontus, and Jacob is mainly the University of Tartu Library.
