De Long Islands
The De Long Islands (Russian Острова Де - Лонга / Ostrowa De - Longa, Yakut Де Лоҥ арыылара / De Long aryylara ) are an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Geographically, they are considered part of the New Siberian Islands, administratively they belong to the Russian Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia).
The uninhabited islands were discovered in the late 19th century in the course of an expedition of the American polar explorer George W. DeLong. They consist of five main islands, including the Bennett Island ( Остров Беннетта ), the Henrietta Island ( Остров Генриетты ), the Jeannette Island ( Остров Жаннетты ) and the two in 1913 and 1914 during the " Hydrographic Expedition of the Arctic Ocean " by Boris Wilkizki discovered islands Wilkizki island ( Остров Вилькицкого ) and Schochow island ( Остров Жохова ).
The islands are located all around the 77 degrees north latitude and 155 degrees east longitude. They are mostly glaciated. The area of the islands is in the sum of 243 km ².
