Deadwood is a city in Lawrence County ( South Dakota). In 2000 the town had 1,380 inhabitants. Due to the city's founding in the extraterritorial Siouxgebiet during a legendary gold rush and the historic sites in the area of the Black Hills is the place attracts thousands of tourists.

History

The place Deadwood was founded in 1876 and originated from a camp of miners who had drawn during the gold rush in the Black Hills. Because the Black Hills were but Indian territory, there were repeated clashes with the Sioux.

The most famous saloon and brothel at the same time the city was the April 7 In 1877 Gem Variety Theater, under the leadership of Al Swearengen.

On September 26, 1879, the town was almost completely destroyed by fire. Since 1 November 1989, the gambling is officially approved in Deadwood.

People

The most prominent citizens of the town were the gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok, the saloon owner Al Swearengen, the Western heroine Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock sheriff. For a time the two notorious gunslinger Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp held on Deadwood.

Reception

The city's founding act is the HBO television series Deadwood, which was produced from 2004 to 2006. In 1986, the novel Deadwood by Pete Dexter, who also deals with the founding of the city and the famous citizens appeared.
