Dean Barton-Smith

Dean Barton -Smith (born Bryan Dean Smith, born 1 November 1967) is a former Australian decathlete.

He was with his personal best of 7964 Australian champion in 1992. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona, he finished 19th place. He was the first deaf Olympian Australia.

In 1994, he took again the national title and finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria.

Four times he participated in the Deaflympics in part (1985, 1989, 1993 and 2005). He won in 1989 the gold medal in the decathlon with 7423 points, it was the world record for the Deaf Sports. In the long jump, he won the gold medal in 1989 and 1993. Also in 1993 he won the silver medal in the 100 m run and the 110 meter hurdles, and the bronze medal in the 200 m run. In 2005 he won the silver medal in the javelin and shot put.

For his contributions to athletics and the Deaf Sports 1998 when he was awarded the Edwin Flack Award and received in 2013 as a Member ( AM) in the Order of Australia.
