Dean Benedetti

Dean Benedetti ( * 1922, probably California, † 20 January 1957 in Italy). Dean Benedetti was a tenor saxophonist, who was strongly influenced by Lester Young. After hearing a plate of Charlie Parker in 1945, he began to study its music, and finally take a commitment Parkers in Hi- De -Ho club by means of a tape machine in 1947 (which Ross Russell in his Charlie Parker biography writes about the wire spools, not the truth ).

Benedetti came in 1948 with the trombonist Jimmy Knepper ( should be the later one of the musicians associated with Charles Mingus ), from his home in California to New York. Benedetti took this year Charlie Parker total twice: On March 31 ( the "Three Deuces ") and on days 7, 10 and 11 July ( the " Club Onyx ").

At the end of 1948 Dean Benedetti returned to California, where he continued his musicological studies and his transcriptions (not just Parker ) until his early death. After he had a rare muscle disease was diagnosed, he could no longer play soon. In 1953 he moved to Italy, where his parents lived and where he died in 1957.
