Debaltseve

Debalzewe (Ukrainian Дебальцеве; Russian Дебальцево / Debaltsevo ) is a city of regional importance in eastern Ukraine with 25 987 inhabitants ( 2013).

Geography

The city is located in the Donbas in the Donetsk oblast 58 km northeast of Oblastzentrum Donetsk. In the east, the city is bordered by the Luhansk Oblast and on the southwest by the municipality belonging to Jenakijewe city Wuhlehirsk.

Municipality

The municipality has 46,000 inhabitants (2013 ) and is divided into the city Debalzewe the south of the borough and the city Switlodarsk (Ukrainian Світлодарськ ) as well as the urban-type settlement Myroniwskyj (Ukrainian Миронівський ) in the north of the municipality.

History

1878, the railway station and the settlement Debalzewe was founded. 1894 workshops for the maintenance of the trains were built around the station. The population grew until 1897 to 2,000 residents in 1911, reaching a population of 20,000 inhabitants. In the 1930s, the city was connected to the electricity and water supply, cultural institutions such as the Palace of Culture were built. 1938 Debalzewe received the status of a city.
