Decatur County (Georgia)

The Decatur County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) Bainbridge is named after Commodore William Bainbridge, commander of the USS Constitution.

Geography

The County is located in southwest Georgia on the northern border of Florida and has an area of ​​1614 square kilometers, of which 68 square kilometers are water surface and borders clockwise to the following counties: Baker County, Mitchell County, Grady County, Seminole County and Miller County.

History

Decatur County was formed on December 8, 1823 from portions of Early County. It was named for Commodore Stephen Decatur, the 1815, the Barbary Coast pirates defeated.
