History

The Decatur County was formed in 1846 from former parts of the Appanoose County. It was named for Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), a hero in the War of 1812.

The Administration was built in 1850. 1853, the county seat was fixed, moved to Independence. Because there was already a town called Independence, Buchanan County, the name of the administrative headquarters in South Independence was renamed. In 1855 it was renamed Leon, as the city is still called today.

The first judicial and administrative building was a log cabin and was built in 1851. After only a few years, this was already too small and a new had to be built. This was however already destroyed during the construction of the wind. The next building burned down in 1874.

1875 a brick building was erected, the wind and the fire offered more resistance. However, burglars robbed in 1877 the contents of the safe, which was, however, obtained again.

In 1905, the citizens opted for a new building. This 1908 built of iron, brick, marble and granite building was fireproof and burglar-proof and is still in operation today.
