Decury

The Decurie (Latin decem from = " ten " ) was originally the smallest unit in the comprehensive ten-man phalanx of the Roman army. My head was the Decurio, probably enlisted rank ( immunis ). With the conversion to the Manipularordnung the group size dropped to eight men who had no formal head and more than contubernium (tent community) were designated.

In the National Roman cavalry were 3 Decurien with 10 riders a Turma. Here the Decurio, however, was an officer rank. By converting to Riders units as auxiliary troops in the division of Turmae Decurien was abandoned.
