Dee Dee Bridgewater

Dee Dee Bridgewater ( born May 27, 1950 in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American jazz singer and actress, and multiple Grammy winner.

Life and work

Bridgewater was born as Denise Garrett. Already her mother and grandmother were successful as singers. Her father, who encouraged her talent, was a music teacher and played the trumpet in the band of Dinah Washington. In 1966, Bridgewater joined as soul and jazz singer in various clubs in Michigan. In 1969 she was discovered by John Garvey, who took them on a tour with Russia. This year she also met the trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, whom she married soon after. When he was engaged by Horace Silver, she moved with him to New York. Bridgewater sang from 1971 for four years as the lead singer of the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis band.
