Defense Switched Network

The Defense Switched Network (DSN ) is a operated by the U.S. military, not accessible to the public, global communications network. The Canadian Forces also have access to this network in order to use it for your own purposes (CSN, Canadian Switched Network).

Survey

It is the predominantly used system for transmitting information of the Defense Information Systems Network ( DISN ), the backbone of the U.S. military intelligence network. The DSN provides a wide range of telecommunications services for the command and control elements of the Defense of the United States and its subordinate departments in task areas of logistics, personnel management, education and maintenance as well as some other government authorities. Practically this means that almost all of the United States military unit has a connection to the world's DSN.

The DSN was established in 1982 as a long distance communication network of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ( JCS ) and the Office of Defense of the United States came into being. It was intended as the main communication system in peace, in times of crisis, in the acute phase just before an attack, in non-nuclear conflicts as well as for the phase after an attack. The new network replaced the old Autovon network.

The DSN consists of four systems: mediation, transmission, timing & synchronization, and network management. The mediation of the DSN consists of multi-functional stand-alone tandem switching, central office switching and remote switching. The transmission, timing and control elements of the DISN be used by all military locations around the world to connect with voice, fax, data and video conferencing services.

In addition to these services supports DSN

  • The Secure Telephone Unit, Third Generation ( STU- IIIs ), special phones, designed by the U.S. government, which can encrypt when connected to a same model the conversations by pressing a button,
  • The more modern Secure Terminal Equipment Units ( STU ), which, like the aforementioned function similarly, but are ISDN -compatible and will only work with a pre-programmed card encryption,
  • The Defense Red Switch Network ( DRSN ), a pure voice communications network exclusively for secure connections among participants and tactical satellite connection points,
  • To connect to insecure IP Router Network ( NIPRNet )
  • To connect to the secure IP Router Network ( SIPRNet ),
  • Access to internal government emergency telephone system ( GETS Government Emergency Telephone System).

Numbering plan

The electoral process and the system of numbering is that of the North American Numbering Plan ( NANPA ) is equal to: After a three-digit area code (area code) followed by a three-digit regional code ( prefix) and then the four-digit subscriber number (suffix). In one place (eg Mannheim and Kaiserslautern) multiple area codes can exist simultaneously, if there are several U.S. facilities there.
