DeFuniak Springs is a city and also the county seat of Walton County in the U.S. state of Florida with 5,177 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

DeFuniak Springs is located approximately 120 kilometers east of Pensacola.

History

The city was founded by the Pensacola & Atlantic Railroad, a subsidiary of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. The train was launched in the 1880s to life in order with the western terminus of the Seaboard Railroad at River Junction, the terminus of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad near Pensacola - today Chattahoochee - to connect. It was named after Frederick R. DeFuniak, president of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. As was often the case in northwestern Florida, DeFuniak Springs was mainly settled by Scots from Virginia as well as North and South Carolina.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 5,177 inhabitants distributed to 2,713 households. The population density was 182.3 inh. / Km ². 70.7 % of the population were white, 20.4% African American, 0.7 % Native American and 0.8 % Asian Americans. 4.5% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.9% in different ethnic groups. 7.5% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 33.9 % of all households lived in 30.4 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 61.3 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.33 persons and the average family size is 2.96 people.

26.4 % of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.5% were 20-39 years old, 23.7% were 40-59 years old and 26.2 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 40 years. 46.4 % of the population were male and 53.6 % female.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 95.71 % of the population spoke Spanish 3.00% and 1.29 % spoke German.

Traffic

DeFuniak Springs is on Interstate 10, from the U.S. Highways 90 (SR 10) and 331 and Florida State Road 83 crosses. The city has a small private airfield. The nearest international airport is the Pensacola International Airport ( 120 km west ).

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 492 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the high range. There were five rape, a robbery, 66 injuries, 69 burglaries, 118 thefts, six car thefts and one arson.

Personalities

The former Florida Governor Sidney Catts (* 1863, † 1936) was based here.

The American Football Referee Walt Anderson and dentist ( b. 1952 ) was born here.

The baseball manager Buck Showalter ( b. 1956 ) was born in DeFuniak Springs.
