Defunkt

Defunkt is a company incorporated in New York City 1978 U.S. funk-jazz band around the trombonist and singer Joseph Bowie, brother of jazz trumpeter Lester Bowie.

History

Defunkt originated in the late 1970s from former colleagues of James Chance. In the first appearances in New York Squat Theatre announced yet as Joe Bowie and the Defunked or The Defunked is the band to the present day. The music of Defunkt combined free jazz and bebop elements of funk and disco deconstructs stereotypes and rigid jazz templates.

Throughout her career, the band underwent several line-up changes. For some time the cast had big band format. The last two remaining from the founding period band members are Joseph Bowie and bassist Kim Clarke. For some time belonged to Vernon Reid, later guitarist of Living Colour to Bowie's ensemble.

Currently (2011 ) there are no less than four occupations of Defunkt Defunkt Soul is the latest. Furthermore, there is still the Defunkt Big Band, Defunkt Defunkt Millenium and Downtown in the 80's.
