Deinococcus-Thermus

Deinococcus radiodurans

  • Deinococcales
  • Thermales

The Deinococci are a class of bacteria, the only one in the division ( phylum ) Deinococcus - Thermus. The bacteria have thick cell walls. After a Gram stain they therefore appear Gram -positive. However, you also have a second cell membrane, as is typical for Gram-negative bacteria.

The class consists of the two orders Thermales and Deinococcales. Hitherto have comparatively few species could be assigned, some of which, however, notable features. So Deinococcus radiodurans and Deinococcus radiophilus are known for their resistance to ionizing radiation, Thermus aquaticus lives in geysers and hot springs.
