DeKalb County (Georgia)

DeKalb County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Decatur.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Georgia and has an area of 702 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Gwinnett County, Rockdale County, Henry County, Clayton County and Fulton County.

History

DeKalb County was formed as the 56th county in Georgia from portions of Henry County, the Gwinnett County and Fayette County on December 9, 1822. It was named after Baron Johann de Kalb, an officer of the army.

According to the census of 2000, there were 665 865 people in DeKalb County; there were counted 249 339 households and 156 584 families. The population density was 959 people per square kilometer. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males.
