Del Norte County, California

The Del Norte County is a county located in the northwest of the State of California, United States. The County is located on the Pacific coast, bordering the counties Siskiyou County and Humboldt County. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat), Crescent City.

History

The county was founded in 1857. It was formed from portions of Klamath County. 1941 Del Norte was one of those counties that seceded from California and Oregon to start the 51st state of the United States, Jefferson. This secession failed.

According to the census of 2000, there were 27 507 people in Del Norte County. There were 9,170 households and 6,290 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.86 % White, 4.30 % African American, 6.43 % Native American, 2.32 % Asian, 0.08 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 3.92 % from other races groups; 4.08% were descended from two or more races. 13.92% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 9,170 households out of which 33.50 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.00 % were married couples living together, 13.60% had a female householder with no husband. 31.40% were non-families. 25.30 % of all households and 10.10% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.08.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 25.10 % under the age of 18, 8.00 % from 18 to 24, 32.20 % from 25 to 44 years, 22.30 % between 45 and 64 years and 12.50% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 123.30 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 130.30 males.

The median income for a household was $ 29,642, and the median income for a family was $ 36,056. Males had a median income of $ 40,072, women $ 22,212. The per capita income was $ 14,573. 20.20% percent of the population and 16.40 % of families are below the poverty line. 26.70 % of those under age 18 and 8.20% were 65 years or older.
