Della Reese

Della Reese (actually Deloreese Patricia Early, born July 6, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American jazz and blues singer and film actress.

Life

Della Reese sang as a child in the children's choir of the Baptist church of Detroit. The transient, Mahalia Jackson took her on in her choir, of which she was until 1949. This year she began a degree in psychology at Wayne State University and founded the Women's Gospel Singers group meditation. After the mother and father of a serious illness to death, she had to give up studying to earn their livelihood, among other things as taxi and truck driver, hairdresser and receptionist. In 1951 she won first prize in a singing competition, which earned her an engagement in the Detroit Flame Showbar.

1953 she moved to New York City and was a singer of the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra. She received a contract with Jubilee Records, and brought several very successful plates out (including In The Still Of The Night and And That Reminds Me ) and was for Do not You Know, an adaptation of Puccini's La Boheme, as best female singer for the Grammy nominated. Other successful albums emerged in the 1960s, along with Della Reese also appeared frequently on television shows and was the first black presenter 1969 own talk show.

In the following years she appeared in numerous series and movies as an actress with; Height of her film career was the film Harlem Nights (1989 ), in which she starred with Eddie Murphy. In addition, they continue to appeared as a singer.

In 1980, she broke down during rehearsals for The Tonight Show together with a severe brain hemorrhage from which she fully recovered, however, later founded the church in Los Angeles Understanding Principles For Better Living and was ordained in 1987 pastor. You still appeared on TV shows such as the sitcom The Royal Family, and later in Touched By an Angel. For his role as an angel, she was once nominated for a Golden Globe Award and twice for an Emmy. In 1994 she was accepted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1998 she was nominated for the gospel album My Soul Feels Better Right Now again for a Grammy.
