Delta Blues

Delta Blues is a direction of the blues, which originated in the 1910s in the Mississippi Delta. It is a very archaic blues style, in which the acoustic guitar accompanied the singing of the blues singer. The term Mississippi Delta in this case indicates a region of the U.S. state of Mississippi between the rivers Mississippi and Yazoo (not to be confused with the mouth of the Mississippi River south of Baton Rouge in Louisiana, see also → Lower Mississippi Delta region ), where the most of the musicians was located.

The Delta Blues is rough and intense, marked by passionate vocals and an economical guitar accompaniment. Note the often offbeat beaten chords, runs on the bass strings and a counterpoint or doubling of the vocal line on the treble strings. Approaches of the call and response are also heard. A further striking element is the game with the bottleneck, a technique on the guitar, which was particularly well-known Charley Patton. The Mississippi Delta Blues from today's perspective the most significant regional characteristics in the development of the blues.

The Delta blues is one of the group of Country Blues.
