Delta County (Michigan)
Delta County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Escanaba.
Geography
The County is located south of the geographic center of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, bordered to the south and southeast by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 5158 square kilometers, of which 2128 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Menominee County, Marquette County, Alger County, Schoolcraft County and on Lake Michigan on the Leelanau County.
History
Delta County was formed in 1843 from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. It was named after the Greek letter delta, since the former Countygrenzen looked like a triangle.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Delta County 38,520 people in 15 836 households, and 10,689 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 95.83 percent White, 0.09 percent African American, 2.21 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.14 percent from other races groups; 1.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.49 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 15 836 households out of which 29.7 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers and 32.5 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent of all households and 13.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.93.
23.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.9 percent 18 to 24 years 26.0 percent between 25 and 44, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 17.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 35,511, and the median income for a family $ 45,079. Males have a median income of $ 37,057, women $ 22,368. The per capita income was $ 18,667. 7.0 percent of families and 9.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
