Deltamethrin is an insecticide from the group of pyrethroids and is used in veterinary medicine against different ectoparasites. It is also used as a pesticide and for impregnating mosquito nets.

It was developed by the group of Michael Elliott ( Rothamsted Research).

Operation

Insects take on deltamethrin on the body surface, whence it spread throughout the insect's body. It is a neurotoxin and causes no longer close the Na channels of nerve cells. Na ions flow freely into the interior of the cell and leads to uncontrollable nerve impulses. This leads first to agitation with cramps, then incoordination and finally paralysis. The insect is unable to move within a few minutes, one speaks of a "knock -down " effect. Death occurs only after some time.

In case of insufficient dose many of the affected insects deltamethrin enzymatically ( Entgiftungsesterasen and mixed function oxidase ) can degrade. By the addition of synergists such as piperonyl butoxide of the enzymatic degradation can be prevented.

Areas of application

In dogs, the use especially against fleas, ticks and the Leishmania -transmitting sandflies done. It is given by using prepared flea collars or shampoos locally to the skin and is distributed with the film covering the entire animal. Resorption through the skin does not occur.

Council Regulation ( EEC) No 2377/90 on maximum residue limits of veterinary medicinal products in foodstuffs of drug is also approved for use in sheep and cattle. Here deltamethrin is a solution applied to the back (so-called pour-on method ) and is effective against head lice, lice and biting and non-biting nuisance insects. Because of the broad spectrum of action of pyrethroids is also of an effect on midges, the vectors of bluetongue assumed.

As a pesticide deltamethrin - containing preparation in Germany and Austria is allowed by the cultivation of cereals, oilseed rape, sugar beet and potatoes, as well as meadows against various " biting " insects. In Switzerland, several preparations are approved, the application range is still somewhat broad and includes, among others, the use against bark beetles in timber.

Accordance with European legislation (Directive 98/8/EC concerning the placing of biocidal products ) and by decision of 20 September 2011 is a decision before the active ingredient deltamethrin from October 1, 2013 the corresponding list (Annex I to Directive 98 / 8/EC ) record for the PT 18 (insecticides ). The release of biocides with the active ingredient deltamethrin is thus initially until September 30, 2023 continue to be permitted in the EU. Switzerland has adopted this provision.
