The Demer at Kuringen

The Demer is a river in the Belgian provinces Limburg and Flemish Brabant. It is a tributary of the River Dyle and belongs to the catchment area of the river Scheldt. In Werchter it empties into the river Dyle. The Demer is a typical rain river: During periods of high rainfall it reaches a much larger runoff than in periods of serious drought. The Demer rises in Ketsingen, just east of Tongeren.

Name interpretation

The origin of the name " Demer " goes back to the Celtic words for " dark " ( " tam " ) and water ( " ara "). " Demer " therefore means "Dark River ".
