Demetrius I of Georgia

Dimitri I. or Demetre I ( Georgian დემეტრე I; * 1093, † after 1158 ) was from 1125 to 1155 and from 1155 to 1156 Georgian king.

Life

Son of King David IV. Early as Crown Prince, he acquired the reputation of a brave warrior and commander, so among other things in 1117 with the capture of the fortress Kaladsor in Shirvan and 1122 in the Battle of Didgori. Appointed shortly before the death of his father in 1125 as co-regent, managed to secure him as sole ruler the foreign policy successes of his father. Successful campaigns against the Iraqi Seljuks in 1125 and 1128, the Sultanate Ahlat 1126 and against the Emirate of ganja in 1139 secured the borders of Georgia.

Domestically, Dimitri had to prevail against the rebellious nobility, the eldest son Dimitris, David einbezog in his intrigues. A first rebellion in 1150 succeeded Dimitri still knock down, but in 1155 forced him to abdicate David. Dimitri had to go into a convent. But David V. reigned for only six months, and Dimitri returned to the throne. In 1156 he handed over the final rule to his son Giorgi III. and died after 1158 as a monk Damian.
