Demetrius III Eucaerus

Demetrius III. (* About 115 BC, † 88 BC), known Eukairos, Theos, and Philopator Soter, was from 95-88 BC king of the Seleucid Empire. He was a son of Antiochus VIII Grypus from his first marriage with Tryphaena.

With the help of the Egyptian king Ptolemy IX. he succeeded by 95 BC to restore a portion of the Syrian dominions of his father. He held court in Damascus, where he pursued the expansion of its territory. He suggested the Maccabean king Alexander Jannaeus in a battle near Shechem devastating, but the hostility of the Jewish population forced him finally to retreat. He fought constantly against his cousin Antiochus X and defeated him with the help of his brother Philip I Philadelphus. When he tried to depose his brother, he was beaten by this with the help of the Arabs and the Parthian Mithridates Eparch Sinnakes, captured and held by the Parthian king Mithridates until his death in 88 BC caught.
