Democratic Party (Gambia)

The Gambia Democratic Party ( GDP) ( German Democratic Party Gambia ) was a democratic political party in Gambia.

History

The Gambia Democratic Party was founded in June 1951 as the first party in the British colony of Gambia. Has come about from the movement " Committee of Union and Progress " by Reverend John Colley Faye in obtaining one of the two seats for Bathurst (former name of the capital Banjul) in the Legislative Council in the election in October 1951. Faye was in the choice a seat, like, reach Ibrahima Garba Momodou - Jahumpa of the Bathurst Young Muslim Society and stabbed it from Pierre Sarr N'Jie of the United Party (UP).

Also at the election to the Council in 1954 obtained the GDP one of three seats. But the party's popularity declined and they went mid-1950s a tactical alliance with the UP one; later, in 1959, with the Gambia Muslim Congress (GMC ).

Before the parliamentary elections in 1960, the GMC united with the GDP under the leadership of Faye and formed the new party Democratic Congress Alliance ( DCA).
