Democratic Party (Mongolia)

The Democratic Party ( DP; Mongolian нам Ардчилсан, Ardtschilsan Nam ) is a political party in Mongolia. Its objectives are to further conversion of Mongolia in an open and democratic society, and the fight against corruption.

Formation

The Democratic Party was established in 2000 from a union of the National Democratic Party ( MNDP; Монголын Yндэсний Ардчилсан Нам, МYАН, Mongolyn undesnii ardtschilsan nam ) and the Mongolian Social Democratic Party ( MSDP; Монголын Социал Демократ нам, Mongolyn sotsial democrat nam ). The MNDP would turn in 1990 emerged from a union of several other parties from whom fell most directly on the democratic revolution of the same year.

Election results

The two founding parties held from 1996 to 2000 50 of the 76 seats in the Parliament, and formed a coalition government at this time. In the parliamentary elections on June 17 and July 27, 2004, the DP came as part of the Motherland Democracy Alliance ( Эх орон - Ардчилсан Эвсэл, Ech oron - Ardtschilsan Ewsel ) to. In the presidential elections on 20 May 2005, the DP candidate Mendsaichaniin Enchsaichan received only 19.7% of the vote.

In the parliamentary elections on 29 June 2008, the Democratic Party was found that the first subject clearly the ruling MPRP. The DP president Elbegdorj said after learning of the defeat, there had been irregularities and his party would not accept the results. There were also violent clashes.

In the presidential elections on 24 May 2009, Elbegdorj prevailed with 51.24 % of the vote against the incumbent Nambaryn Enkhbayar and was sworn in on 12 June 2009 as president.
