Democratic Party of Kosovo

The Democratic Party of Kosovo (Albanian partia Demokratike e Kosovës; Acronym: PDK ) is the largest political party in Kosovo. It is characterized social democratic and relatively left of the political spectrum -oriented.

History

The party was founded on 14 May 1999 of the political wing of the KLA and was first called Party for the Democratic Progress of Kosovo ( Alb. partia për Progresin Demokratik e Kosovës ), but was renamed on 21 May 2000 to the present name.

Chairman of the party since its founding Hashim Thaçi, who was a military leader in the KLA in Kosovo war in 1999. The first Prime Minister of the then part of Yugoslavia, Kosovo was still after the war Bajram Rexhepi ( PDK). Prior to the declaration of independence of 17 February 2008, the PDK sat like most Kosovo Albanian parties for an independent and sovereign Kosovo.

In the last parliamentary elections of 2010/2011, the party won about 32.11 % of the votes cast. Thus she was able to secure for itself 34 seats. The party entered into a coalition with the New Kosovo Alliance and the minority parties to form a government.

End of February 2014 broke Jakup Krasniqi, Fatmir Limaj and other members of the PDK with Thaci and founded the Initiative for Kosovo. Thus, the PDK is now represented by 31 deputies in the parliament.

International cooperation

In recent years there has been a rapprochement between the PDK and the Socialist International.
