Democratic Party (South Korea, 2005)

The Millennium Democratic Party, MDP ( Korean: 새천년 민주당, Saecheonnyeon Minju - dang ) was a liberal party in South Korea. It was founded in 1995 under the name National Congress for New Politics, in 2000 took the name of MDP and solved in 2008, when the Democratic Party came into being.

Seminal figure of the party was Kim Dae -jung, who was president from 1998 to 2003, and was honored with the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize. The MDP was of the sunshine policy toward North Korea, which was coined by Kim and aimed at a peaceful reunification of North and South Korea by opening and approach.

The Millennium Democratic Party introduced in 2002 Roh Moo-hyun on as a presidential candidate. This also won the election, but came out after taking office in 2003. This led to a split in the MDP and the founding of the Uri Party.

In the 2007 presidential election, there was a bitter defeat for the now renamed the Democratic Party the party and the liberal camp as a whole. Then merged the previously competing liberal parties to form the United Democratic Party.
