Democrats (Greenland)

The Democrats ( Cal: Demokraatit ) are a social liberal political party in Greenland.

History and Program

It was formed on 28 November 2002 by the politician Per Berthelsen, who had been previously excluded from the social democratic Siumut year. He led the party until 2007. Then he lost in a fight candidacy during an Extraordinary General Meeting the chair to Jens B. Frederiksen. Frederiksen led the Democrats in 2009 after severe loss of votes in a government coalition with socialists and independent candidate list. He was Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Transport. In addition, still represents Palle Christiansen, the Democrats in the government of Kuupik Kleist.

Election results

At the last election of the Inatsisartuts in 2009, the party gained 12.8% of the vote and four seats in parliament.

In 2005 she came to 22.6 % of the votes cast and received 7 of 31 seats. Compared to 2002, this was a slight gain, because at that time 19.7 % of the votes were accounted for by the Democrats, which meant 5 seats. The party is a full Greenlandic independence skeptical about why it is preferably selected from the Danish vocal citizens.
