Denens

Denens is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Denens is located on 504 m above sea level. M., 3 km west-north- west of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). This former farm extends on the edge of a plateau between the valleys of the Boiron de Morges Morges, in the Vaud Mittelland, a scenic location about 120 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​3.3 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the hinterland of Morges. The communal land extends from the flat area west of Morges on the vast plateau of Denens, on 518 m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached. From the municipality surface 1997 10 % came from settlements, 2% of forest and woody plants and 88 % to agriculture.

Population

With 672 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Denens one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 88.6% inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 5.3 % and 1.6 % in English (as of 2000). The population of Denens amounted in 1850 to 269 residents in 1900 to 225 inhabitants. After the population had decreased to 189 to 1960 inhabitants, since a rapid population increase was recorded with a tripling of the population within 40 years.

Economy

Denens was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming and fruit growing have an important role in the economic structure of the population. History

The first documentary mention of the place was already in the year 1005 under the name Disnens. After 1164 the present name is first delivered, the names Dignens ( 1220 ), Digneins ( 1228 ) and Dynens ( 1453) appeared. The place name comes from the personal name Diso or Disin and means for the people of Diso.

Since the Middle Ages Denens belonged to the rule Vufflens -le- Château. By 1300, it fell to Savoy. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the bailiwick of Morges. After the collapse of the ancien régime Denens belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Morges.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint- Lazare in Denens is first mentioned in 1177. It belonged to the Canons of the Great Saint Bernard. The present building dates in large part of the 15th century.
