Denis Gremelmayr

Denis Gremelmayr ( born August 16, 1981 in Heidelberg ) is a German tennis player.

Tennis career

Denis Gremelmayr began at the age of five years, to play tennis with his parents. As a junior in 1999 he was the number 1 in Germany and reached among others at the U.S. Open, the last sixteen.

Since 2000, he played in the adult area and was able to win for the first time a futures tournament in September 2000 in Japan. 2001 was followed by two more titles in India and the Dominican Republic, and thus the way into the top 500 of the world tennis rankings.

After another Futures title in the United Arab Emirates at the beginning of 2002, Gremelmayr was in February 2002 in Copenhagen by a victory over the then eight- year-old Robin Soderling first qualify for an ATP tournament, but lost in the first round against Irakli Labadze. The rest of the year he played mainly tournaments of the ATP Challenger Tour, and was able to reach the quarter-finals three times. His best finish so far in the world rankings was ranked 264th

In 2003 Gremelmayr was struggling with a shoulder injury. His greatest successes this year was a double title at the Challenger tournament in Fürth on the side of Simon Greul and a Futures title in the Netherlands.

Similarly, the following year was marked by injuries: Due to an injury to his right wrist Denis Gremelmayr was between April 2004 and August 2004 no tournament contest and fell back to number 720 in the world rankings. Thanks to strong results at Future tournaments at the end of the year (including a victory in Thailand) but he was able to finish again in the top 500 the year.

In 2005 there were equal to celebrate several successes: On Future - level Gremelmayr won two tournaments, and Calabasas and also achieved for the first time the finals of a Challenger tournament. He also failed to qualify this year for the ATP tournaments of 's- Hertogenbosch, Bangkok and Tokyo, and cashed in Bangkok against the Croat Roko Karanusic his first match at the ATP level. At the U.S. Open 2005 Gremelmayr tried for the first time to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament, but he lost in the third qualifying round against the Swiss Michael Lammer.

Better he made it in early 2006, when he successfully qualified and thus for the first time was at the Australian Open in the main draw of a Grand Slam. After a first round victory over the Swede Jonas Bjorkman Gremelmayr met in the second round to the set at position 13 American Robby Ginepri, he could still wrestle in five sets after a 0-2 sentence residue. In the third round but then had terminus against the eventual finalists Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus. The 2009 season was less successful: in the first round of the Australian Open, he lost in five sets against David Ferrer. During this time he rose in the rankings from number 324 to number 142 in the following hard- court season but Gremelmayr could not continue his success; the best results in the further course of the year were a semi-final in Bangkok in September 2010 and two weeks later quarter finals in Mons.

Beginning of January 2011 Denis Gremelmayr stepped in Chennai for the first time in over a year at an ATP tournament. However, he lost his first round match against Robert Kendrick. A week later Gremelmayr succeeded at the Australian Open qualifying for the main draw. There, however, he resigned in the first round in three sets to smooth Radek Stepanek out. Two weeks later Gremelmayr could in Johannesburg against the qualifiers Nikala Scholtz first time since May of 2009 to win an ATP match. In the second round he was able to win against the top 100 player Adrian Mannarino the first set, but ultimately lost the match in three sets yet. After five consecutive Erstrundenniederlagen Gremelmayr succeeded only in April 2011 at the ATP tournament in Munich win the match. He he qualified as a lucky loser for the main draw, defeating there the top 100 player Robin Haase, before he retired in the second round against Philipp Kohlschreiber. Due to this success, he rose for the first time in over two years back into the top 100 in the world rankings. After two second-round defeats at Challengers in Prague and Zagreb, he qualified for the French Open, retired from there but in the first round against Nikolay Davydenko. At the subsequent Challenger in Fürth he came to the semifinals but lost clearly against Jan- Lennard Struff. At the tournament in 's- Hertogenbosch, he came to the quarter finals, beating Jarkko Nieminen, among others.

Denis Gremelmayr played until 2004 when TC Blau-Weiss Sundern in 1 Tennis League and was with this in 2003 and 2004 German Masters. In 2005 he moved to the TK Green-White Mannheim, with whom he was in 2005, 2007 and 2010 German champion and 2008 German Vice Champion.
