Denis the Carthusian

Dionysius the Carthusian, also called Dionysius Carthusianus, Dionysius van Leuven, Dionysius van Rijkel, Rijckel Dionysius, Dionysius Carthusius or Dionysius of Roermond ( * 1402 or 1403 Rijkel, † March 12, 1471 in Roermond ) was a philosopher, theologian, mystic and scholastics of the Middle ages.

Life

Dionysius van Rijkel came from the noble family of nobles of Leewis or Leewen. Since he could not enter the Carthusians at the age of 18, he enrolled at the University of Cologne, studied the Scriptures and theology and received his doctorate at age 21 to the Master of Divinity. He subsequently joined in Roermond in the Charterhouse Bethlehem of the Virgin. 1423 he also began his literary activity. With 187 volumes, he became the most prolific German theologian of the Middle Ages. With his writings on the Sacred Heart devotion he exercised great influence on other medieval theologians such as John Justus von Landsberg, from. Josef Stierli referred to him as the greatest German theologian of the Middle Ages beside Albertus Magnus. From 1466 to 1469 he was prior of the Charterhouse of 's- Hertogenbosch and accompanied Nicholas of Cusa on his visitation tour of the Netherlands. Dom Dionysius died on March 12, 1471 in Roermond.

Works

Because of his visionary writings and his ascetic way of life called him the Church as "Doctor Ecstaticus ". Dionysius is considered the author of 187 fonts; his rich work is a final climax and at the same time summary of late medieval philosophy and theology.
