Denise Karbon

Denise Karbon ( born August 16, 1980 in Brixen ) is an Italian former Alpine skier. The South Tyrolean became Junior World Champion in their specialized discipline giant slalom and won two World Championship medals, six World Cup races and even the World Cup discipline standings.

Biography

Carbon graduated from the Handelsoberschule Bolzano and has since been working as a member of the sports group of the Finance Guard in Predazzo. Her father worked as a ski instructor at times and her two brothers, Martin (Member of the Carabinieri Sports Group and the Italian C- squad ) and Pirmin ( junior athlete of the TZ Schlern ) is also dedicated to the skiing.

At the age of three years Carboniferous started skiing at the local Gunserlift. In 1987, she denied her first VSS ski race with SC Castelrotto headed by Birgit Senoner. As a 11- year-old she was already driving a Grand Prix under coach Peter Thomaseth. In 1993 she won the Trofeo Topolino. At 14, she moved in 1994 from SC Castelrotto for TZ Schlern. New coach was now her father Arnold. She was recognized as a talent and found refuge in the South Tyrolean provincial squad under coach Ernst Pfeifhofer. Finally, in 1997 the entry was made in the Italian C- national. A year later rose to carbon in the B-team and the following year in the World Cup team. The first big success recorded Carboniferous age of 19 at the Junior World Championship 1999 in Pra Loup (France) by winning the giant slalom gold medal, which meant at the same time to qualify for the World Cup finals in the Sierra Nevada (Spain). A 7th place in Cortina d' Ampezzo and on 28 December 2002, the first podium finish in the World Cup (3rd place in the giant slalom in Semmering in Austria ) promised a greater career. On 13 December 2003, she then won the first World Cup victory in the giant slalom on the Gran Risa in Alta Badia. On February 13, 2003, she was at the World Championships in St. Moritz World silver medalist in the giant slalom.

Carboniferous career has been marked by repeated injury problems. Hardly once she was able to prepare for a World Cup injury-free season. Nevertheless, she succeeded again and again, work backwards after six serious knee injury at the World Cup top. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre she could win again in a February 13, the bronze medal in their specialized discipline. But again, they could not take advantage of their long top form. On March 1, 2007, she injured her back when she in slalom training in Val di Fassa drew upon a broken leg and had to end the season prematurely. In October 2007, she celebrated with a victory in the World Cup opener in Soelden a successful comeback. The following three giant slaloms they could decide for themselves. After five wins this season Carboniferous was prematurely determined as the winner of the giant slalom World Cup.

At the 2009 World Championships in Val d'Isere carbon missed twice almost a coin: both the giant slalom and the slalom, she finished fourth, the residue was only a hundredth of a second to the third-place finisher in the slalom. The end of November 2009, she suffered a meniscus injury in the giant slalom in Aspen. After surgery, she had to pause for four weeks. At the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 she was 18th in the slalom and 23rd in the giant slalom. In early November 2010, Carboniferous injured again at the meniscus, and she had to take a multi-week break from racing again. The Giant Slalom World Championships 2011 in Garmisch -Partenkirchen, she finished in fourth position.

In the World Cup Carbon reached after their winning streak in the 2007/ 08 season no further victories, but several podiums. In the seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13 they drove sporadically in the top ten. At the World Cup finals in 2013 in Lenzerheide they threaded in the second run of the giant slalom (the last race of the season ) at a gate and broke his ankle.
