Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts

The Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts was a professional dance school in Los Angeles with a branch office in New York City that existed in 1915 to 1931 and was led by Ruth St. Denis and the dancers Ted Shawn. The founding pair taught a combination of dance and mime with esoteric overtones. The school was affiliated with the Denishawn Dance Company, which undertook 1925-26 very successful U.S. tours with oriental -inspired dances.

" Denishawn " was a kind of link between the teachings of François Delsarte to increase the dance expression and the U.S. renewal efforts of stage dance in the 20th century. The school had a significant influence on modern dance and exotic dancing in the Hollywood film and in the Revue those years. Among the most famous students include dance pioneer Martha Graham ( until 1923 ), the silent film star Louise Brooks and the dance therapist Marian Chace.
